Honing the vision...

One of the best things about relief teaching, is the breadth of exposure it offers; to different year levels, classroom structures and dynamics and sheer scope of talent in your orbit once you enter the classroom.  With each new classroom experience, I am broadening my pedagogical repertoire and also honing my understanding of what works for me in the classroom.  And in this, my first month of relief teaching, I have noticed a number of things about my professional disposition, and what this means for me as a teacher.
  • Relationships are at the core of everything we do.  With parents, this starts with conversation, acknowledgement, wherever possible.  With students, this means adhering to a ratio of (at a minimum), five positive interactions for each negative one;
  • I see the value in, and use for  multiple sources of data regarding student learning and achievement; and
  • Predictable routines, stable environments and highly structured lessons best suit my teaching style.
