Today was a good awakening to the reality that I need to expand and deepen my knowledge and skills around effective teaching of numeracy. Since I graduated (and before then really), I have been extensively researching the teaching of literacy, to the point that I feel very confident that I can effectively deliver high quality literacy programs to any primary school cohort. This has been motivated to a large extent by my own passion for literacy.
While it's great to know my strengths and passions, it's also important to feel strong and confident across the breadth of the curriculum, and today, while teaching a Year 6 maths class, I realised that I don't bring a similar level of confidence to my maths lessons, as compared with my literacy lessons.
To that end, I now commit myself to professional development across all areas of numeracy teaching! Onward and upward with the journey of professional growth!
